On Nov. 22nd, 2008 at 8pm EST till 10pm, YouTube hosted it’s first real-life event. When I popped in, to check things out. I was asking myself, ‘Will YouTube need a bailout after this performance?‘ Lol. No seriously, when I watched about 20 minutes of the event, I must’ve got the short end of the stick because I thought it was horrible and a huge waste of money. I held this belief for about 5 hours and then decided to see what they called ‘highlights’ of the night.

Wow! After watching some of the highlights, I immediately changed my opinion from negativity to neutral. YouTube Live had some great moments, some were funny, others were just very entertaining, and of course it had it’s boring and ‘why is that on the air‘ moments.

When I originally watched Youtube live, I caught the worst end of the show. I should’ve given them more than 20 minutes of my time but heck 20 mintues is 17% sampling, so, I guess I was justified in my lack of faith in the quality of the show.

Aside from this, imagine the hosting cost to having a minimum of 1 million views watching live on a website, with little to no glitches. Some have said Youtube partnered with Akamai (TechCrunch as a similar report) to help carry the heavy bandwidth.

My question is How many people watched YouTube Live on November 22nd, 2008 at 8pm est!!?? So far nothing has been published but 1 millions seems to be short changing it, I’m sure more watched. I look forward to finding the numbers, if you find it before me, please comment below!!!

Either way, the event was sponsored by Virgin America. They launched the first ‘free wifi plane’ during the event. That is a great innovation and I hope wifi access continues to spread because the internet is a powerful tool. I know Google and other companies are hoping to have free wifi access throughout Africa but they know that the technology isn’t there to make it cost effective. I hope Google and other companies continue to fund these type of projects to spread the Internet to all corners of the earth. Knowledge is power and enough tempered knowledge brings wisdom. It would be great to have 6 billion wise people. :)

Altogether, Youtube live was good and it was definitely a great first step. I love the internet ;) . I love innovation. I love technology because they all take sooo much stress and time away. I can’t imagine less information, less technology, and less innovation. Keep it up Youtube and keep rockin’. :)
